How to host Inquiry
Because our current server is so small, we cannot provide access to classes outside of Washington University. We can, however, assist in setting up a local mirror at your site, so that we can provide you the Inquiry system.
In order to run Inquiry, you will need:
- A Server. Our server is a Sun Sparc 10 running Solaris 9. It works perfectly well for our small class sizes (7-10 students). Large classes would be best server by a modern Sun or a high-end Linux box. The system will run on Windows XP and MacOSX, but unfortunately, neither of these systems supports the library required to generate PDF files. If you don't want to use the PDF subsystem, either of these are a good choice. Solaris 9 and Linux are the prefered operating systems for the server.
- Server Software:
- A Web Server: Apache is best, but IIS will work as well.
- PHP: An opensource server-side language
- MySQL: A non-commercial relational database.
- PDFlib: Plug-in to PHP used for generating PDF files.
- A way to mirror our contents: We'll have to work this out personally.
